Eight stories of gods from India
The Indian heaven of gods is vast and varied. The goddesses and gods have many faces and many names, and the relationships are far-reaching. Despite divine powers, worldly complications are negotiated; the complex fabric of Indian mythology is woven from cunning and love, strife and affection.
The elephant-headed Ganesha likes to play tricks on others, the protective Vishnu argues with the creator god Brahma. He, in turn, does not shy away from telling a big lie to make himself look good. And when the world is once again dominated by evil, then the fearless Durga is needed to defeat the demonic.
The retellings are accompanied by miniature paintings from the collection of the Rietberg Museum, Zurich. This art form reached its peak between the 17th and 18th centuries in the royal courts of India.
