People and nature in China's cultural history
Art is a fascinating way to gain insights into another culture and way of thinking. This is particularly true for Chinese landscape painting, because the entire Chinese cultural and intellectual history is reflected in this over 1,000-year-old tradition. The view of nature follows its own rules. The ink paintings, which seem idyllic at first glance, are much more than just romantic depictions of landscapes. Through subtle allusions and references, the painters were able to convey a whole range of messages: from social positioning and political opposition to philosophical considerations and very personal feelings.
